Biography

This introduction is about influences and the direction they have taken me. In other resumes and web-site bio’s I have described my place as “a musician that has been involved in writing, recording, performing, and teaching since graduating from a small college in northwestern Ohio“. My primary function these days is teaching guitar and bass guitar on a college level as well as instructing at a music store studio. In northwest Ohio one does not pay all the bills by performing, so the teaching gig is very necessary. I pride myself in my transcriptional abilities and rely on that for teaching purposes as well as using traditional music theory, reading, and playing techniques.

I describe myself as a bass player by choice and a guitar teacher by vocation. The journey started after being presented with a guitar by my parents when 8 years old. Then various school band directors and private teachers re-enforced the natural ear and sense of timing that I have enjoyed. But actually being a part of numerous small groups may have been the most educational part of my development, especially after the rock-n-roll bug took over. The many talented musicians that I have had the pleasure of associating with over the years have been inspiring , each one adding a layer of experience that I would not have earned alone.

The rock influence has been the core of my tendencies, but the jazz and blues music of such groups as Steely Dan, Chicago, Doobie Brothers, and similar classic rock artists also exert their force. Prog-rock groups such as Dream Theater, Port Mahadia, Yes and the like are lurking in their influence as well. And a recent side project as member of “Siberian Solstice”, a Trans-Siberian Orchestra cover band, has been invigorating. Their mix of classical styles with the rock format is a concept that has been very interesting and exciting.

I seem to work best as a contributor to other peoples concepts and have not taken the time to build a large body of work on my own. Maybe that will change.

Included music files are two of my own tunes: “Reunion” and “Can You Survive” both were written by me in separate recording projects about ten years apart. The lyrics and music and bass parts are my efforts. The recording quality of both may not be state of the art but a sense of style is evident. You cannot survive on your own and you cannot forget your roots, either.

Special thanks to Mixposure artist David C Deal with whom I have contributed bass lines for a number of tracks for his “Transformations” CD project. The ability of a site like this to link musicians from around the world has been a revolution to the music community, obviously, and a revelation for my continuance as a contributor to future projects that may present themselves. Thank-you Dr. Deal for your opportunity. And I welcome future opportunities from other artists.
