Biography

If you came to this page, the one thing you need to know is You are Special. You are beautiful and unique and creative in who you are. There is no one like you and you were made for great things in this world. If you are discouraged there is hope, if you are depressed there is happiness, if you are lonely there is a friend, if you are in trouble there is a solution We care about You.

IJenNeh means “Heaven” in the African dialect of the Mandingo tribe. IJenNeh Reggae is an unique combination of Reggae, African, Gospel and Beatbox music. This music was created exclusively by our music director, Lasana Kanneh. IJenNeh developed from the earlier groups of Echoes of the Blind, Liberian Acappella and African Gospel Acappella.

Echoes of the Blind, was the first group organized by Lasana, and based in Monrovia, Liberia. This group was composed of eight blind men who sang for food on the war ravaged streets of Liberia. Lasana remembers singing in the midst of rebel fighting with bullets flying over their heads. At different points, he was forced to sing for infamous war lords.

Liberian Acappella was a group of ten Liberian men who by fate traveled out of Africa and toured 46 states in four years. The goal of this group was raising funds for the orphans left back home. One of the highlights, of this group was singing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee for a crowd of over 20,000 people.

African Gospel Acappella consisted of 6 blind men from the  original two groups. This group toured the Pacific Northwest for four years and you can still hear Lasana’s distinctive lead vocals on the official website http://www.africangospel.org and their cds.

While the former groups were all acappella, IJenNeh Reggae has added instrumental music and our signature drums. This has created our unique sound with outstanding vocals and pulsating beats.

The music director of these groups, Lasana Kanneh suffered much in his native homeland of Liberia. He was born blind and ostracized by his community for this disability. He escaped war, persecution, poverty and personal failure to bring you these beautiful songs of hope, faith, and restoration.
